The recent shift to sunnier skies has many Portlanders dreaming of cruising down stumptown’s tree-lined boulevards on a bike. For many, these visions might also be accompanied by questions about how to best take advantage of a bicycle to meet the needs of everyday life –like a simple trip to the grocery store, or a family outing to Oaks Park. While the option of cycling for utilitarian purposes seems simple enough, when you consider carrying more than yourself on a bicycle the picture can get a little fuzzy.
If you’d like to map out your own course towards a summer filled with low-car utility and family bicycling, consider joining me this Saturday, May 16, for the Low-Car Lifestyle Clinic at the Portland Farmers Market. Sponsored by the fine folks at Joe Bike and the Portland Farmers Market, this free presentation will include live demonstrations on a variety of utility bicycles, in addition to my experience and perspective on a wide array of topics related to utility and family transportation (by bike).

Especially tuned for those new to family and utility cycling, this clinic will provide the tools to help people map their own path to augmenting or replacing automotive transportation with bicycles. This clinic is definitely for you if any of the following questions have entered your mind recently:
- how do I safely transport my kids around town on a bike?
- can I get a bike that will pack a bunch of groceries and my children effectively?
- what if I need to pack something really heavy or awkwardly shaped?
- should I use a trailer or get a bike built just for the job?
- is this going to cost me a fortune?
- where do I start? who do I call?
The Low-Car Lifestyle Clinic is presented as part of the Portland Farmers Market’s bike month activities. The weather should be grand and the market will no doubt be bustling –I hope to see you there!
