We spent a couple of hours yesterday prepping the yard for our new garden expansion. As stated in my first garden diary post, last year represented a big break for us as we cleared 1/3 of our existing back yard for garden space. This year we plan to clear an additional 1/3 for more crops.
Instead of shaving off the grass sod and laying it out to dry or carting it off our property altogether, we choose to simply bury it. It’s far more work, but we take advantage of the opportunity to till the soil as well. Yes, it’s a lot of ugly manual work, but it ensures that we end up with a far suprior bed of earth in which to build our garden (with additional ammendments). It worked well last year, so we’re going to stick with a proven formula.
